Neytendabætur

Neytendabætur is an Icelandic term used in economic policy to describe measures aimed at improving consumer welfare by reducing the real cost of goods and services or by increasing household purchasing power. The term covers instruments that transfer resources to households or shield them from price increases, rather than measures targeted at producers.

Forms include direct cash transfers or rebates to households; subsidies or price supports for essential goods and services such as energy, housing, or transportation; tax credits or deductions targeted at consumers; and public provision of services at reduced outlays. The concept can be used for short-term stabilization as well as longer-term social welfare goals.

Policy design considerations include targeting, fiscal cost, potential inflationary effects, and distributional impact. Proponents argue that neytendabætur help protect vulnerable groups from price shocks, support low-income households, and promote social equity. Critics maintain that they can be costly, distort price signals and incentives, and be difficult to target effectively, potentially benefiting higher-income groups if not well targeted.
