Neutronitären refers to a hypothetical state of matter that would exist in the cores of certain types of neutron stars, particularly those with masses exceeding the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) limit. This limit represents the maximum mass a stable neutron star can have before collapsing into a black hole. Neutronitären is not yet confirmed to exist but is a subject of theoretical and observational study in astrophysics.

In this state, matter would be composed almost entirely of neutrons, with protons and electrons having combined to form neutrons through inverse beta decay. The extreme density in neutron star cores—on the order of nuclear density (approximately 10¹⁷ kg/m³)—would lead to exotic quantum mechanical effects. Neutronitären would likely exhibit properties distinct from both ordinary neutron stars and black holes, such as unusual equations of state and potential phase transitions under extreme pressure.

The term "neutronitären" is not widely used in mainstream scientific literature; instead, researchers often discuss "hyperonic matter" or "quark matter" as possible constituents of dense stellar cores. Some theories suggest that neutron stars could contain layers of neutron-rich matter, with potential transitions into more exotic states like strange matter or quark-gluon plasma. Observations of neutron star mergers, gravitational waves, and electromagnetic emissions provide indirect clues about the internal composition of these objects, but direct evidence for neutronitären remains elusive.

The study of neutronitären is closely tied to the broader field of high-energy nuclear physics and astrophysics, particularly in understanding the behavior of matter under conditions far beyond those achievable in terrestrial laboratories.
