Neutroförekomsten, also known as neutropenia, is a medical condition characterized by a low count of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell crucial for fighting infections. Neutrophils are the most abundant type of white blood cells in the body and play a vital role in the immune system's defense against bacterial infections. Neutropenia can be caused by various factors, including infections, autoimmune disorders, certain medications, and genetic conditions.

Neutropenia is typically classified into two categories: absolute and relative. Absolute neutropenia occurs when the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) is less than 1,500 cells per microliter of blood. Relative neutropenia, on the other hand, is defined as a neutrophil count less than 1.5 times the standard deviation below the lower limit of normal, regardless of the absolute number. Both types of neutropenia can lead to increased susceptibility to infections, as the body's ability to fight off bacterial invaders is compromised.

The diagnosis of neutropenia is usually made through a complete blood count (CBC) test, which measures the number of different types of blood cells, including neutrophils. Treatment for neutropenia depends on the underlying cause. Infections may require antibiotics, while autoimmune disorders might be managed with immunosuppressive medications. In some cases, neutropenia can be a side effect of certain medications, and adjusting the dosage or switching to an alternative medication may be necessary. Genetic conditions may require more specialized treatment approaches.
