Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that transmit signals across synapses, the tiny gaps between neurons. They play a crucial role in various brain functions, including mood regulation, memory formation, and motor control. Neurotransmitters are synthesized in the neuron's cell body and stored in vesicles until they are released into the synaptic cleft in response to an electrical impulse.
