Neurohormonales refers to the interaction between the nervous system and endocrine system, where hormones released by neuroendocrine cells influence neural activity and vice versa. This bidirectional communication plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological and behavioral processes, including stress responses, metabolism, mood, and reproductive functions. Neurohormones are chemical messengers synthesized in neurons or specialized endocrine cells that travel through the bloodstream to target distant organs or tissues, while neural signals can stimulate or inhibit hormone secretion.

A key component of neurohormonal regulation is the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which mediates the body’s response to stress. When stress is detected, the hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), prompting the pituitary gland to secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH then stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol, a stress hormone that helps the body respond to challenges. Disruptions in this axis are associated with conditions such as chronic stress, depression, and autoimmune diseases.

Another important example is the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which governs reproductive functions. Hormones like follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), released by the pituitary, regulate the production of sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone in the gonads. Neurohormonal feedback loops ensure precise control over these processes, maintaining hormonal balance and reproductive health.

Neurohormonal mechanisms also influence emotional states and behaviors. Serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters produced in the brain, can affect hormone secretion, while hormones like oxytocin and prolactin, released during social bonding and breastfeeding, modulate neural circuits involved in emotional responses. Understanding neurohormonal interactions provides insights into both normal physiological functions and pathological conditions, such as hormonal imbalances, neurological disorders, and psychiatric illnesses. Research in this field continues to expand, highlighting the complex interplay between the nervous and endocrine systems in maintaining homeostasis and influencing overall health.
