Neuroglobins
Neuroglobins are a family of heme-containing proteins found in the nervous system of vertebrates. They are structurally related to other globins, such as myoglobin and hemoglobin, but have distinct functions and expression patterns. Neuroglobins are primarily found in neurons, particularly in the brain, but also in peripheral nervous tissue. Their presence suggests a role in neuronal physiology beyond simple oxygen transport, as their oxygen affinity is generally higher than that of myoglobin.
The precise physiological roles of neuroglobins are still under investigation, but research suggests they are involved
Variations in neuroglobin expression have been observed in different brain regions and during development. Furthermore, alterations
