Neurofüsioloogide

Neurofüsioloogide is the Estonian term for neurophysiologists. Neurophysiologists are medical doctors or scientists who specialize in the study of the nervous system and its functions. Their work involves understanding how the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves work together to control bodily functions, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This field integrates knowledge from neurology, physiology, and sometimes psychology and computer science.

The primary focus of neurophysiology is to investigate the electrical and chemical signaling that occurs within neurons and across synapses. This research aims to elucidate the mechanisms underlying normal neurological processes such as sensory perception, motor control, learning, and memory. Additionally, neurophysiologists study how these processes are disrupted in various neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and neuropathies.

Diagnostic tools and techniques employed by neurophysiologists include electroencephalography (EEG) to measure brain activity, electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies to assess nerve and muscle function, and evoked potentials to evaluate the transmission of sensory information. These methods help in diagnosing and monitoring neurological conditions. Research in neurophysiology also contributes to the development of new treatments and therapies for neurological diseases, aiming to restore or improve nervous system function. The field is continuously evolving with advancements in imaging technologies and molecular biology.
