Neubiberg

Neubiberg is a municipality in the district of Munich, in the Free State of Bavaria, Germany. It lies southeast of Munich and is part of the Munich metropolitan region in Upper Bavaria. The town is bordered by the city of Munich and several neighboring municipalities, forming a suburban community with residential areas, parks, and small commercial centers.

Historically, Neubiberg developed around agriculture and later expanded significantly with the construction of Fliegerhorst Neubiberg, a military airfield established in the 1930s. During World War II the site served as a Luftwaffe base. After 1945 it came under United States control and was used by the US military for several decades. In the 1960s and 1970s the area underwent civilian redevelopment, and in 1973 the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich established a campus on the former air base, shaping Neubiberg’s identity as a university town and residential suburb.

Education and institutions are central to the municipality. The Bundeswehr University Munich operates a major campus in Neubiberg, alongside associated facilities and research activities. The presence of the university, together with public services and local businesses, characterizes the local economy and cultural life.

Transportation and geography: Neubiberg is connected to Munich by road and public transit, with convenient access to the city center and to the broader Bavarian road network. The landscape is predominantly suburban, featuring housing developments, green spaces, and community amenities.

Notable features: the former air base site remains a defining element of Neubiberg, with parts repurposed for university use and civilian facilities, reflecting the town’s transition from a military installation to an education and residential community.
