Netzwerksegmente, also known as network segments or broadcast domains, are subdivisions of a computer network. The primary purpose of segmenting a network is to improve performance, enhance security, and simplify management. By dividing a larger network into smaller, more manageable parts, broadcast traffic can be contained within its respective segment, reducing the overall network congestion. This is particularly important in large networks where broadcast messages can quickly overwhelm devices.

Security is another key benefit of network segmentation. Sensitive data or critical systems can be placed in isolated segments, making it more difficult for unauthorized users to access them. If a security breach occurs in one segment, the impact can be limited to that specific area, preventing it from spreading to the entire network. This isolation allows for more granular control over access policies and the implementation of specific security measures for each segment.

Network segmentation is typically achieved through the use of devices like switches and routers. Switches operate at Layer 2 of the OSI model and can create separate collision domains, while routers operate at Layer 3 and create separate broadcast domains. Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) are a common method for logically segmenting a physical network without requiring extensive physical rewiring. Different departments, user groups, or types of devices can be assigned to different VLANs, effectively creating separate network segments. The administration of a segmented network also becomes more straightforward, as changes or troubleshooting can be focused on specific segments rather than the entire network infrastructure.
