Netwerkprioriteit, also known as network priority or Quality of Service (QoS) prioritization, refers to the mechanisms and techniques used by network administrators to manage and control the flow of network traffic. The primary goal is to ensure that certain types of data receive preferential treatment over others, especially when network resources are limited or congested. This is crucial for applications that are sensitive to latency and jitter, such as Voice over IP (VoIP), video conferencing, and online gaming, where delays can significantly degrade the user experience.

Different types of traffic are assigned different priority levels. For instance, real-time communication traffic might be given the highest priority, followed by critical business applications, and then less time-sensitive data like file transfers or web browsing. Network devices, such as routers and switches, are configured to identify and categorize traffic based on predefined rules, which can include source and destination IP addresses, port numbers, or specific protocols.

Once traffic is classified, network devices can employ various methods to enforce prioritization. These include queuing mechanisms, where high-priority traffic is placed in faster queues, and bandwidth allocation, which reserves a certain amount of bandwidth for critical applications. Traffic shaping and policing are also used to control the rate at which traffic enters or exits the network, further ensuring that priority traffic is not starved of resources. By effectively managing network priority, organizations can optimize network performance, improve application responsiveness, and ensure a more reliable and consistent user experience.
