Netværksstier, often referred to as network paths, represent the sequence of nodes or devices that data packets traverse to travel from a source to a destination within a computer network. These paths are not static and can change dynamically based on network conditions, available routes, and routing protocols. Understanding network paths is crucial for network administrators and engineers to troubleshoot connectivity issues, optimize performance, and ensure efficient data flow.

The creation and maintenance of network paths are governed by routing protocols, such as RIP, OSPF, and BGP. These protocols enable routers to exchange information about network topology and the best available paths to various destinations. When a device sends data, its gateway router examines the destination IP address and consults its routing table to determine the next hop. This process repeats at each subsequent router along the path until the data reaches its intended recipient.

Tools like the traceroute command (or tracert on Windows) are commonly used to visualize and diagnose network paths. Traceroute sends packets with incrementally increasing Time To Live (TTL) values, causing each router along the path to respond with its IP address as the TTL expires. This allows users to see each hop the data takes and identify potential bottlenecks or points of failure. Analyzing these paths helps in understanding latency, packet loss, and the overall health of the network.
