Nettoprimäärituotanto

Nettoprimäärituotanto, often abbreviated as NPP, refers to the rate at which producers, such as plants, algae, and cyanobacteria, convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into organic compounds through photosynthesis, minus the amount of energy they use for their own metabolic processes, like respiration. In simpler terms, it is the net accumulation of energy and biomass by these organisms.

This process is fundamental to most ecosystems on Earth. The energy captured by primary producers forms the base of the food web, supporting all other life forms. Photosynthesis converts light energy into chemical energy stored in organic matter. Respiration is the process by which organisms break down organic compounds to release energy for their own survival and growth. NPP is the difference between the gross primary production (GPP), which is the total amount of carbon fixed, and the respiration (R) of the producers themselves, so NPP = GPP - R.

Factors influencing NPP include sunlight availability, water, nutrient levels (like nitrogen and phosphorus), and temperature. Different ecosystems have vastly different NPPs. For example, tropical rainforests and coral reefs have very high NPPs due to favorable conditions, while deserts and deep oceans have significantly lower rates. Understanding NPP is crucial for studying ecosystem productivity, carbon cycling, and the overall health of the planet. It helps scientists estimate how much energy is available to higher trophic levels and how ecosystems might respond to environmental changes.
