Nettonuluitstoot is the goal of reducing a company, city or country’s greenhouse gas emissions to net zero over a specified period, usually 2030 or 2050. It combines efforts to cut direct and indirect emissions with carbon removal strategies such as afforestation, soil carbon sequestration, carbon capture and storage or offsets that meet verified standards. The term is used in the context of the Paris Agreement and climate policy frameworks, and it forms the basis of many national and corporate climate pledges.

To calculate nettonuluitstoot organizations typically use the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, which classifies emissions into three scopes. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, Scope 2 includes indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat or steam, and Scope 3 accounts for all other indirect emissions, such as those from suppliers, product use, waste and employee travel.
