Nestekideelementtejä, known in English as liquid crystal elements, are fundamental components in many modern display technologies. These elements utilize the unique properties of liquid crystals, which can exhibit characteristics of both conventional liquids and solid crystals. Specifically, liquid crystals can be aligned by electric fields, a property that allows them to control the passage of light.

The basic principle of a liquid crystal display (LCD) involves sandwiching a thin layer of liquid crystal material between two polarized filters. When an electric voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, its molecular orientation changes. This change in orientation alters how light passing through the liquid crystal is polarized. By carefully controlling the voltage applied to individual pixels, the amount of light that passes through the second polarized filter can be modulated, creating images. Different types of liquid crystal phases, such as nematic, smectic, and cholesteric, are utilized in various display applications, each offering different optical properties and response times.

The development of liquid crystal technology has led to widespread adoption in devices ranging from calculators and digital watches to computer monitors, televisions, and smartphone screens. Their low power consumption, relatively low cost, and ability to produce high-resolution images have made them a dominant display technology for decades. While newer technologies like OLED are gaining popularity, liquid crystal displays continue to be refined and remain a significant part of the electronic display market.
