Nesseltieren, also known as cnidarians, are a phylum of simple, aquatic, multicellular animals. They are characterized by the presence of specialized stinging cells called nematocysts, which are used for capturing prey and defense. This phylum includes a diverse range of organisms such as jellyfish, corals, sea anemones, and hydras.

Nesseltieren typically exhibit radial symmetry, meaning their body parts are arranged around a central axis. They possess a simple body plan consisting of two main cell layers: an outer epidermis and an inner gastrodermis, separated by a jelly-like layer called the mesoglea. Their digestive system is a simple sac with a single opening that serves as both mouth and anus.

Reproduction in Nesseltieren can be asexual, often through budding, or sexual, involving the release of gametes into the water. Many species have a life cycle that alternates between a sessile polyp stage and a free-swimming medusa stage, though some species possess only one of these forms.
