Neshat

Neshat is a surname of Persian origin. It is most famously associated with Shirin Neshat, an Iranian visual artist. Neshat is known for her work in photography, video, and film, often exploring themes of identity, gender, and cultural difference in her native Iran and in the West. Her art frequently features women and addresses the complexities of female experience within Islamic societies.

Shirin Neshat was born in Qazvin, Iran, in 1957. She left Iran in 1974 to study art in the United States, where she received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley, and her Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Arts at Columbia University. She returned to Iran in the mid-1990s, and this period significantly influenced her artistic direction, leading to some of her most recognized bodies of work.

Her photographic series, such as "Women of Allah" (1993–1997) and "Soliloquy" (1999), combine black-and-white imagery with Farsi calligraphy, creating powerful visual narratives. Neshat's films, including "Turbulent" (1998) and "Rapture" (1999), are often presented as two-channel video installations and explore dichotomies like male and female, public and private, and silence and sound.

Neshat's work has been exhibited internationally in major museums and galleries. She has received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to contemporary art.
