Nesetørrhet, also known as dry nose or nasal dryness, is a condition characterized by a lack of moisture in the nasal passages. This can lead to various uncomfortable symptoms, including a feeling of dryness, irritation, crusting, and sometimes even bleeding. The nasal mucosa, which normally produces mucus to keep the nose moist and trap particles, may become inflamed or produce less mucus.

Several factors can contribute to nesetørrhet. Environmental factors such as low humidity, dry climates, and exposure to heating or air conditioning can strip moisture from the nasal passages. Certain medical conditions, like Sjögren's syndrome, autoimmune disorders, and chronic infections, can also affect mucus production. Medications, particularly antihistamines, decongestants, and some acne treatments, are known side effects that can cause nasal dryness. Aging can also play a role, as mucus production naturally decreases with age.

Symptoms of nesetørrhet can range from mild discomfort to more severe issues. Common signs include a persistent feeling of dryness, a stuffy or blocked sensation, crusting inside the nose, nosebleeds (epistaxis), and a burning or itching sensation. In some cases, individuals may experience an increased susceptibility to sinus infections due to the compromised protective barrier of the nasal mucosa.

Treatment for nesetørrhet focuses on restoring moisture to the nasal passages and addressing the underlying cause if identifiable. Saline nasal sprays or rinses are often recommended to add moisture and help clear crusts. Humidifiers can be used in homes and workplaces to increase ambient humidity. Petroleum jelly or nasal gels can be applied to the inside of the nostrils to provide lubrication. If medication is suspected as the cause, a healthcare professional may suggest an alternative. Addressing underlying medical conditions is also crucial for effective management.
