Nervåterväxt
Nervåterväxt, also known as nerve regeneration, refers to the regrowth of nerve tissue. This process is most commonly associated with the peripheral nervous system, which includes nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord. In the peripheral nervous system, nerve damage can be followed by a remarkable capacity for regeneration. Following injury, the damaged nerve fiber, called the axon, can sprout new growth and reconnect with its target tissue, facilitated by specialized cells called Schwann cells. This regrowth is a slow process, with nerve fibers typically growing back at a rate of about one millimeter per day. Complete functional recovery depends on several factors, including the extent of the damage, the type of nerve injured, and the proximity of the injury to the nerve's cell body.
While regeneration is robust in the peripheral nervous system, it is significantly limited in the central nervous
