Neodvisnost

Neodvisnost is a term used in several Slavic languages, including Slovenian, to describe the condition or state of independence. It derives from odvisnost (dependence) with the negating prefix ne-, literally meaning not dependent. In political contexts, neodvisnost denotes sovereignty and the ability of a polity to govern itself without external control.

Neodvisnost can refer to political independence of a state or nation, as well as to personal or economic independence, and to cultural or administrative autonomy. In political science, independence implies exclusive competence over internal affairs and external relations, subject to international law and norms.

Achieving neodvisnost typically involves political processes such as constitutional changes, referendums, secession, or decolonization. International recognition by other states and admission to international organizations are often critical components. The Montevideo Convention outlines criteria for statehood: a permanent population, defined territory, a government, and the capacity to enter relations with other states, though recognition remains a political act.

Independence movements have played a central role in modern history, shaping the map of Europe and the world. They have produced peaceful transitions and, in other cases, conflict.
