Negasjonellleddet refers to the negation element in a sentence, the part that expresses negation and sets the scope of what is being negated. In Norwegian grammar, the core negation is typically realized as a negation particle such as ikke or, in some dialects, ikkje. Other negative forms, like ingen, ingenting, or aldri, can function as negative operators or quantifiers in specific contexts. Together, these elements constitute the negasjonellledd of a clause.

Forms and realizations vary. The most common form is the particle ikke (ikkje in some dialects), which usually follows the finite verb in main clauses: Jeg liker ikke kaffe. Negative determiners or pronouns such as ingen or ingenting can negate nouns or noun phrases: Det finnes ingen bøker her. Adverbs like aldri (never) and ikke-so-called negative adverbials can extend the negation to time or modality: Jeg har aldri vært der før. The choice of form depends on meaning, emphasis, and syntactic context.

Syntactic behaviour and scope are central aspects. Ikke typically occupies a position after the finite verb and scopes over the predicate, though its precise position can vary with word order and emphasis. In questions, negation often remains attached to the verb: Har jeg ikke spist? In subordinate clauses, negasjonellleddet continues to negate the clause it belongs to, with scope potentially crossing clause boundaries under certain constructions.

Cross-linguistically, negasjonellledd interacts with auxiliary verbs, negation in subordinate clauses, and focus marking, reflecting the broader typology of negation systems in Germanic languages.
