Nefslímhúðarbólga

Nefslímhúðarbólga is the Icelandic term for rhinitis, a common condition characterized by inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose. This inflammation can lead to a variety of symptoms, including a runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, and itching. The discharge from the nose can be clear and watery or thicker and colored, depending on the underlying cause. Postnasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, can also occur, leading to a sore throat or cough.

There are several potential causes for nefslímhúðarbólga. Allergic rhinitis, often referred to as hay fever, is triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. Non-allergic rhinitis can be caused by irritants like smoke, strong perfumes, or changes in temperature and humidity. Infections, particularly viral infections like the common cold, are another frequent cause of temporary nefslímhúðarbólga. In some cases, certain medications or hormonal changes can also contribute to the condition. Diagnosis typically involves a review of symptoms and medical history, and sometimes allergy testing may be recommended.
