Needseconomic is a term that describes the fundamental requirements for human survival and well-being that drive economic activity. These are the basic needs that individuals and societies seek to satisfy, and the pursuit of satisfying these needs is a core motivation for production, consumption, and trade.

Commonly categorized by Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, basic economic needs start with physiological requirements such as food, water, shelter, and clothing. Once these are met, individuals then seek safety and security, which can translate into economic demands for stable housing, healthcare, and employment. Higher-level needs, such as belonging, esteem, and self-actualization, also influence economic behavior through demands for social goods, education, entertainment, and personal development.

The concept of "needs" in economics is distinct from "wants." While wants are desires that are not essential for survival, needs represent a more fundamental level of requirement. However, the line between needs and wants can be blurred and is often influenced by cultural, social, and technological factors. For instance, what is considered a basic need in one society might be seen as a luxury in another.
