Naturedominant refers to an ecological or developmental framework in which natural elements, processes, and forces are given primary influence over human activities or systems. The concept has been applied in several fields, including ecology, landscape architecture, urban planning, and cultural studies, to highlight the importance of preserving ecological integrity while accommodating human use.

In ecology, a naturedominant system is one in which a single environmental factor—often a climatic, hydrological, or soil condition—governs the structure and function of the community. For example, a temperate rainforest dominated by the moisture regime will see species composition and dynamics largely driven by precipitation patterns rather than, say, human land use. Ecologists such as Thomas Lovejoy used the term to describe ecosystems where minimal human footprint allows natural processes like succession, predation, and nutrient cycling to proceed unimpeded. This contrasts with anthropogenic or technology-dominated systems, where human interventions greatly alter biotic and abiotic interactions.

In design and planning, naturedominant principles encourage the integration of native vegetation, local hydrology, and daylighting to create spaces that perform ecological functions while serving human needs. The approach emerged in the late twentieth century as part of the movement toward sustainable architecture and gained traction in landscape restoration projects where reintroducing natural pathways, such as river meanders, restores habitat connectivity and flood control. The term has broadened to cultural analyses of media, literature, and music, where narratives celebrate boundary-less relationships between humans and the natural world.
