Natura2000

Natura 2000 is a network of nature protection areas in the European Union. It is established under the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive. The network aims to ensure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats. It covers terrestrial, freshwater, and marine areas.

The Birds Directive requires the designation of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for wild birds. The Habitats Directive requires the designation of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) for other species and habitats. These two types of sites together form the Natura 2000 network. Member States are responsible for proposing and managing these sites.

The goal of Natura 2000 is not to prevent all human activity but to ensure that human activities are compatible with the conservation objectives of the sites. This can involve a range of management measures, from strict protection to sustainable land use. The network covers a significant portion of the EU's land and sea area, making it the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world. It plays a crucial role in safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem services across Europe.
