Nanxiong

Nanxiong is a city located in Guangdong province, China. It is situated in the northern part of the province, within the prefecture-level city of Shaoguan. The city is known for its historical significance and its natural landscapes. Nanxiong is often referred to as the "hometown of the Nanxiong Man," a significant fossil discovery that sheds light on early human evolution in China. Archaeological research in the area has unearthed numerous hominid fossils and artifacts dating back hundreds of thousands of years.

Geographically, Nanxiong is characterized by its hilly terrain and is traversed by several rivers, contributing to its fertile land. The region experiences a subtropical monsoon climate, with distinct seasons. The economy of Nanxiong has traditionally relied on agriculture, with crops such as rice and tobacco being prominent. In recent years, efforts have been made to develop tourism, capitalizing on its historical sites and natural beauty, including the scenic Danxia Mountain which is a UNESCO World Heritage site located nearby, though technically outside the administrative boundaries of Nanxiong city proper.
