Nanumea

Nanumea is an atoll in the northwest of Tuvalu. It is located at 5°57′0″S 176°9′0″E. The atoll consists of one major island, Nanumea, and a smaller island, Lakena. The population of Nanumea is approximately 600 people. The main village on Nanumea is also called Nanumea.

The economy of Nanumea is primarily based on subsistence agriculture and fishing. The islanders grow taro, breadfruit, and coconuts. They also catch fish, crabs, and shellfish from the surrounding lagoon and ocean. Some residents also engage in small-scale trading of handicrafts and agricultural produce.

Nanumea has a primary school and a health clinic. The atoll is connected to the capital Funafuti by boat, with irregular ferry services. There is no airport on Nanumea. The atoll's infrastructure is limited, reflecting the challenges of developing remote island communities.

The atoll is characterized by its natural beauty, with white sandy beaches, coral reefs, and a clear turquoise lagoon. The marine environment supports a diverse range of fish and other sea life, making it an attractive destination for snorkeling and diving. However, Nanumea, like other low-lying islands in Tuvalu, is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Conservation efforts are in place to protect the fragile ecosystem and ensure the sustainability of its natural resources. The community actively participates in environmental protection initiatives.
