Nalikwanda

Nalikwanda is a settlement in the Western Province of Zambia, located within the Mongu District. It is situated on the eastern side of the Barotse Floodplain, a significant geographical feature of the region. Nalikwanda is primarily an agricultural area, with its inhabitants relying on farming, particularly maize cultivation, and fishing for their livelihoods. The community's existence and prosperity are closely tied to the annual flooding and receding of the Zambezi River, which replenishes the soil and provides fish.

The area experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. During the rainy season, the floodplain swells, impacting accessibility and daily life for residents. The culture of Nalikwanda is strongly influenced by the Lozi people, who are the dominant ethnic group in the Barotseland region. Traditional customs, social structures, and the Lozi language are prevalent. The settlement's infrastructure is basic, with a focus on essential services. Education and healthcare facilities are present but often limited in scope and resources, reflecting the rural nature of the area. Nalikwanda, like many other communities in the Barotse Floodplain, faces challenges related to poverty, limited access to markets, and the impacts of climate change on agricultural practices. Despite these challenges, the community maintains a strong sense of cultural identity and resilience.
