Nachholbedarf is a German noun describing the need to close a deficit or backlog in relation to a reference level, target, or peer group. It combines nachholen, "to catch up," and Bedarf, "need" or "requirement." In policy discussions it denotes gaps that should be addressed by action, investment, or reform.

In economics and regional policy the term often refers to catch-up growth or development gaps: lagging regions or economies are said to have Nachholbedarf compared with more advanced counterparts. The concept guides decisions on infrastructure investment, modernization of institutions, and human capital development. In education, the phrase is used for learning deficits or unequal outcomes that necessitate remedial measures, expanded resources, and targeted programs. In other domains, such as health care, digital infrastructure, or climate and energy policy, Nachholbedarf signals the distance to targets or modern standards and the need for policy interventions to close the gap.
