Biological role: GlcNAc is a structural component of chitin, the tough polymer that makes up the exoskeletons of arthropods and the cell walls of fungi. Biosynthesis and metabolism: UDP-GlcNAc is produced from fructose-6-phosphate through the hexosamine pathway, consuming glutamine and acetyl-CoA. This activated sugar participates in numerous cellular processes, including protein glycosylation, lipid glycosylation, and the modification of signaling molecules.

Applications and safety: GlcNAc is sold as a dietary supplement for joint health; clinical evidence regarding efficacy for osteoarthritis is mixed. It is also used in research and industry as a substrate for glycan synthesis and for studying chitin and peptidoglycan biosynthesis.
