NaClløsning, or sodium chloride solution, is a homogeneous liquid formed by dissolving sodium chloride (NaCl) in water. It is colorless and transparent and behaves as an electrolyte because the salt dissociates into sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl−) ions.

In water, NaCl dissolves readily and conducts electricity due to ion formation. Its solubility is high, around 357 grams per liter at room temperature, corresponding to about 6 moles per liter, though practical concentrations depend on the intended use. At different concentrations the solution can be isotonic, hypotonic, or hypertonic relative to human body fluids.

Common concentrations include isotonic saline, about 0.9% w/v NaCl, used widely in medicine as a sterile intravenous fluid; hypotonic solutions (for example around 0.45%) and hypertonic solutions (such as 3% or 5%) are used in specific clinical contexts under professional supervision. Household saline for cleaning or rinsing is typically near 0.9% and is prepared from food-grade salt and potable water.

Preparation is straightforward: NaCl is dissolved in water to the desired concentration, with sterile water or saline-grade standards required for medical applications. For intravenous use, the solution must be manufactured under sterile, aseptic conditions to avoid contamination.

Applications of NaClløsning span medical, laboratory, and culinary fields. In medicine, it serves as a standard saline infusion, wound irrigation, and as a dilution medium. In food processing, it acts as a preservative and flavor enhancer or in brining. In laboratories, it provides a simple electrolyte solution for experiments and calibration tasks.

Safety and handling are generally favorable for dilute solutions; however, highly concentrated or contaminated solutions can cause irritation or tissue damage. Medical use requires proper sterility and dosing guidance.
