In practice, NOxrensing refers to applying a rinsing medium that absorbs, dissolves, or chemically neutralizes NOx, followed by management of the resulting effluent.

Mechanism and variables: effectiveness depends on NOx speciation (for example, NO, NO2, or higher oxides), the rinsing medium (water, alkaline, or solvent-based), temperature, contact time, and surface characteristics. Rinses may operate by physical dissolution, chemical reaction to form stable nitrite or nitrate species, or adsorption onto the solvent or additive.
