NOxkatalyytit, also known as NOx reduction catalysts, are essential components in modern exhaust gas aftertreatment systems, particularly for diesel engines. Their primary function is to convert nitrogen oxides (NOx), a group of harmful pollutants contributing to smog and acid rain, into harmless nitrogen gas (N2) and oxygen (O2). This process is crucial for meeting increasingly stringent emissions regulations worldwide.

There are several types of NOx catalysts employed in automotive and industrial applications. One common type is the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst. In SCR systems, a reductant, typically urea-based AdBlue, is injected into the exhaust stream upstream of the catalyst. The urea decomposes into ammonia (NH3), which then reacts with NOx on the catalyst surface to produce N2 and water. Another approach involves Lean NOx Traps (LNTs), also known as NOx adsorbers. These catalysts temporarily store NOx during lean (oxygen-rich) engine operation. Periodically, the engine runs in a rich (fuel-rich) mode, during which the stored NOx is reduced to N2.

The effectiveness of NOx catalysts depends on various factors, including temperature, the presence of other exhaust gas components, and the catalyst's formulation. Catalyst materials often include precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium, along with zeolites or other support structures that provide a large surface area for the chemical reactions. Research and development continue to focus on improving catalyst durability, efficiency at lower temperatures, and reducing the cost of these critical emission control technologies.
