NIRB

The Nunavut Impact Review Board, commonly known as NIRB, is an independent regulatory agency established under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Its primary mandate is to protect the Arctic environment and socio-economic interests of the Inuit in Nunavut, Canada. NIRB plays a crucial role in assessing the potential environmental and socio-economic impacts of proposed development projects within the Nunavut Settlement Area.

NIRB's process begins when a project proposal is submitted. The Board then undertakes a screening to determine if a project requires further review. If significant adverse impacts are anticipated, NIRB conducts an in-depth environmental and socio-economic impact assessment. This assessment involves public consultation, engagement with Inuit organizations, government agencies, and other stakeholders. NIRB considers all relevant information to make recommendations to the Minister of Northern Affairs and the Nunavut Water Board, who then make the final decision on whether or not to approve a project and under what conditions. The Board's work ensures that development in Nunavut proceeds in a way that is sustainable and respects the rights and culture of the Inuit people.
