NICS0, or the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, is a comprehensive database used by Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) to instantly determine whether a prospective buyer is eligible to purchase firearms or explosives. Operated by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Index, it is a component of the Background Check Program, which is administered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The NICS Index contains various types of information, including but not limited to:
1. Records of individuals who are prohibited from purchasing firearms due to criminal convictions, mental health
2. Records of individuals subject to civil commitment proceedings.
3. Records of individuals subject to domestic violence restraining orders.
4. Records of individuals subject to protective orders.
5. Records of individuals subject to final orders of protection.
6. Records of individuals subject to final orders of restraining orders.
7. Records of individuals subject to final orders of protection from abuse.
8. Records of individuals subject to final orders of restraining orders from abuse.
9. Records of individuals subject to final orders of protection from stalking.
