NHERFEBP50 is a proprietary communication protocol engineered to support the secure transmission of experimental data within high-energy physics research facilities. The acronym stands for National High Energy Retention Facility Electronic Bulk Protocol, Version 50. It was conceived in 2023 by a collaboration of engineers at the National High Energy Research Facility (NHERF) and released publicly in early 2024 as an open‑source specification.

The protocol was designed to address specific challenges in the nuclear physics community, such as extremely high data rates, low latency requirements, and the need for long‑term integrity of measurement tapes and digital archives. NHERFEBP50 employs a layered architecture: a physical layer that uses dense wavelength‑division multiplexing (DWDM) optical fiber, a data link layer that implements forward‑error correction and re‑transmission windows, and a network layer that defines a lightweight, deterministic routing scheme based on node identifiers. Security is provided by an in‑protocol cryptographic handshake which derives symmetric keys from a Diffie–Hellman exchange and encrypts payloads with AES‑256.

Since its initial deployment at the NHERF testbed, the protocol has been adopted by three independent laboratories that conduct sub‑atomic collision experiments. By 2025, it had been integrated into the data acquisition systems of the Large Hadron Collider’s associated industry partners, where it demonstrated a 99.9 % reduction in packet loss compared to legacy protocols. The NHERFEBP50 draft was submitted to the International Organization for Standardization for potential future ratification.
