NEMOcompliant

NEMOcompliant refers to hardware, software, or networks that conform to the Network Mobility (NEMO) standards defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It usually denotes adherence to the Network Mobility Basic Support Protocol (NEMO BSP), RFC 3963, and related mechanisms that let an entire mobile network preserve Internet connectivity as it roams across access networks. In a NEMOcompliant deployment, a mobile router represents the mobile network and maintains a tunnel to a home agent on the home network.

This arrangement allows devices inside the mobile network to retain ongoing sessions and IP addresses as the mobile router moves. The home agent tracks the mobile router’s binding state and forwards traffic between the foreign network and the home network via encapsulation. NEMO BSP defines tunnel setup and state management; related RFCs address auto-configuration and, where implemented, route optimization. Route optimization, however, is optional and not universally deployed.

Typical use cases include vehicles (buses, trains, ships), aircraft, and other moving platforms, as well as temporary deployments such as disaster response or remote campuses that require continuous connectivity for a mobile network.

Standards and testing: The formal standard is RFC 3963. Compliance is demonstrated through interoperability testing and vendor conformance programs. Limitations include potential overhead from tunneling and security considerations around binding updates and tunnel endpoints.
