NDRC

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is a key administrative agency of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. Established in 2003 through the merger of the former State Development Planning Commission and the State Economic and Trade Commission, the NDRC plays a central role in China’s economic planning, macroeconomic regulation, and reform coordination.

The NDRC is responsible for formulating and implementing national economic and social development plans, as well as key policies related to investment, pricing, and industrial development. It oversees major infrastructure projects, including transportation, energy, and telecommunications, ensuring their alignment with national strategic goals. Additionally, the commission regulates monopolistic practices, promotes fair competition, and coordinates regional economic development to balance growth across different regions.

Internationally, the NDRC engages in economic diplomacy, negotiating trade agreements and participating in global economic governance. It also monitors foreign investment to ensure compliance with national economic policies. The commission collaborates with other government bodies to address structural reforms, including state-owned enterprise (SOE) governance, fiscal policy, and environmental sustainability.

The NDRC operates under the leadership of the State Council, reporting directly to the Premier of China. Its decisions influence China’s economic trajectory, making it a critical institution in shaping the country’s development model.
