The principle behind NDIR sensors relies on the fact that many gases absorb infrared light at specific wavelengths. By measuring the amount of infrared light absorbed by a sample, the concentration of the gas can be determined.

The sensor typically consists of a light source that emits infrared radiation, a sample chamber through which the gas to be measured flows, an optical filter that selects the specific wavelength absorbed by the target gas, and a detector that measures the intensity of the infrared light after it has passed through the sample. A reference detector or a second optical filter may also be used to compensate for variations in the light source or background gases.

NDIR sensors are widely used due to their accuracy, long-term stability, and relatively low cost. They are particularly effective for measuring gases like carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and carbon monoxide (CO), which have distinct absorption bands in the infrared spectrum. Applications include environmental monitoring, industrial process control, breath analysis for medical diagnostics, and automotive emissions testing.
