NAPeiwit

NAPeiwit, in Dutch also referred to as the NAP peptide, is a short neuropeptide derived from the larger protein Activity-Dependent Neuroprotective Protein (ADNP). The peptide is most commonly discussed in scientific literature as NAP, with the sequence NAPVSIPQ. It has been investigated for its potential to support neuronal survival and to protect against diverse forms of neural injury.

Proposed mechanisms for the effects of NAPeiwit include stabilization of the neuronal cytoskeleton, particularly through interactions with tubulin and other microtubule-associated proteins. By supporting cytoskeletal integrity, NAPpeptide is thought to promote resilience of neurons under stress, such as excitotoxicity, ischemia, or neurodegenerative conditions. In preclinical studies, NAP has shown protective effects in cell cultures and animal models, including reduced neuronal damage and improved functional outcomes in some injury paradigms.

Research status and applications: NAPeiwit has been the subject of experimental and translational studies, with synthetic derivatives such as the NAP peptide being evaluated in early-stage clinical contexts. At present there is no approved medical use for NAPeiwit, and its clinical efficacy remains unproven. The peptide is primarily used in research settings to explore neuroprotection and cytoskeletal stabilization and to better understand the role of ADNP-derived fragments in brain biology.
