NAACs

NAACs commonly refers to the National Assessment and Accreditation Council in India, though the organization is usually referred to by its acronym NAAC. NAAC is an autonomous body established in 1994 by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit higher education institutions and programs. It operates to promote quality in higher education and accountability within the Indian system.

The council conducts periodic evaluations of universities, colleges, and other higher education institutions to determine their quality status and potential for improvement. Its work is guided by a framework that considers multiple criteria, including curricular aspects, teaching-learning and evaluation, research, innovations and extension, infrastructure and learning resources, student support and progression, governance, leadership and management, and institutional values and best practices. Institutions prepare a self-study report, followed by a peer team visit and a formal accreditation decision.

Accreditation results in a status and a grade, typically represented on a scale that reflects overall quality as well as a cumulative grade point. Validity of accreditation usually ranges for several years (commonly five to seven), after which institutions may seek re-evaluation. The process is designed to encourage institutions to improve and to provide stakeholders with a standardized quality benchmark.

NAAC operates under the broader mandate of the UGC to promote quality assurance in higher education. It has influenced accreditation practices across India and contributed to greater transparency in institutional performance, though it has also faced criticisms regarding resource intensity and the focus of metrics.
