Nõelabiopsia

Nõelabiopsia is a medical procedure used to obtain a tissue sample from a suspicious lump or organ for microscopic examination. It involves using a hollow needle to extract a small piece of tissue. This diagnostic technique is commonly employed to determine whether a growth is benign or malignant, aiding in the diagnosis of various conditions, particularly cancer. The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia and is typically done by a radiologist or surgeon.

There are several types of needle biopsies, including fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and core needle biopsy. FNA uses a very thin needle to collect cells, while a core needle biopsy uses a larger, hollow needle to remove a small cylinder of tissue. The choice of needle type depends on the size, location, and characteristics of the lesion being investigated. Imaging guidance, such as ultrasound or CT scans, is often used to ensure accurate needle placement.

Following the biopsy, the tissue sample is sent to a pathology laboratory where it is analyzed by a pathologist. The pathologist examines the cells and tissue structure to identify any abnormalities. The results of the biopsy are crucial for determining the appropriate treatment plan for the patient. While generally safe, potential risks associated with needle biopsy include bleeding, infection, and bruising at the biopsy site.
