Névképzés, a Hungarian term, refers to the process of word formation, specifically the creation of new words. It is a fundamental aspect of language evolution and allows for the expansion of vocabulary to express new concepts, objects, or ideas. Névképzés encompasses several mechanisms within Hungarian grammar, the most prominent being suffixation. This involves attaching specific suffixes to existing word roots to alter their meaning or grammatical function. For example, adding the suffix "-ség" to an adjective can form an abstract noun, such as "szépség" (beauty) from "szép" (beautiful).

Another significant method is compounding, where two or more words are joined together to create a new word with a combined meaning. An example of this is "vasút" (railway), formed from "vas" (iron) and "út" (road). Compounding is a very productive process in Hungarian, allowing for the formation of complex and nuanced terms. Derivation, often through prefixes or a combination of prefixes and suffixes, also plays a role in névleness. While not as pervasive as suffixation or compounding, these methods contribute to the flexibility of the Hungarian language.
