Närhinnatransplantation

Närhinnatransplantation, also known as conjunctival grafting, is a surgical procedure used to replace or cover damaged or missing conjunctival tissue. The conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelids and covers the white part of the eyeball. Damage to the conjunctiva can result from trauma, disease, or surgical removal of tissue.

The procedure typically involves harvesting a graft of conjunctival tissue from another part of the patient's own eye or from a donor. Autologous grafts, taken from the patient's own eye, are most common to minimize the risk of rejection. The harvested graft is then carefully sutured or adhered in place to cover the affected area.

Närhinnatransplantation is performed to restore the protective function of the conjunctiva, improve the appearance of the eye, and alleviate symptoms such as dryness, irritation, and photophobia. It is often used in cases of symblepharon (adhesion of the eyelid to the eyeball), large conjunctival defects following tumor excision, or severe ocular surface disease. The success of the procedure depends on factors such as the size and location of the defect, the health of the recipient bed, and proper post-operative care. Recovery involves a period of healing and may require the use of lubricating eye drops and other medications to prevent inflammation and infection.
