Nátriumvegyületek is the Hungarian term for sodium compounds. Sodium, a highly reactive alkali metal, readily forms ionic bonds with nonmetals, creating a vast array of compounds with diverse properties and applications. The most common and well-known sodium compound is sodium chloride (NaCl), commonly known as table salt. It is essential for life, playing a crucial role in nerve function and fluid balance in organisms. Industrially, it is a fundamental raw material for the production of chlorine and sodium hydroxide.

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also called caustic soda, is a strong base widely used in manufacturing processes such as soap and detergent production, paper making, and aluminum refining. Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), or soda ash, is another significant industrial chemical, primarily used in glass manufacturing, chemical production, and water treatment. Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), or baking soda, is known for its leavening properties in baking and is also used as an antacid and in fire extinguishers.

Other notable sodium compounds include sodium nitrate (NaNO3), used as a fertilizer and in explosives, and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), employed in detergents and papermaking. The reactivity of sodium means that pure sodium metal is rarely encountered in its elemental form in nature, instead existing bound within these various ionic compounds. The abundance and utility of sodium compounds make them indispensable in numerous aspects of modern life, from food and medicine to industry and agriculture.
