Mülldeponien, also known as landfills, are sites for the disposal of waste materials by burial. Historically, they were often simple dumps where waste was unceremoniously deposited. However, modern Mülldeponien are engineered facilities designed to isolate waste from the surrounding environment. These facilities are constructed with impermeable liners, such as clay or plastic, to prevent leachate, the liquid that forms when rainwater filters through waste, from contaminating groundwater and soil.
