Möhne

Mähne is the German noun for mane, the long hair that grows from the neck of certain mammals, most notably horses. In zoology the term refers to the elongated hair that forms a distinctive neck crest on various species, including horses and some big cats. The word is used in everyday German to describe this feature in animals as well as in human contexts that imitate a mane.

In horses, the mane consists of longer hairs that rise along the neck and can extend toward the shoulders. Its length, thickness, and texture vary by breed and individual. Manes are commonly groomed for practicality and appearance: they may be brushed, braided, or pulled to keep them neat for riding, showing, or competition. Breeding standards and riding disciplines influence preferred mane styles, with some handlers favoring a full, natural mane and others opting for trimming or plaiting.

In other animals, manes serve different roles. Male lions develop prominent manes under the influence of testosterone, with size and color related to age, health, and environmental factors. The mane can function as a display to attract mates or deter rivals and may provide some protection in fights. The concept of a mane also appears in cultural references, heraldry, and literature as a symbol of vigor and majesty.
