Unlike non-defining relative clauses, which provide additional, non-essential information, defining clauses are crucial for understanding which specific entity is being discussed.

In Finnish grammar, defining relative clauses are often formed using relative pronouns such as "joka," "mikä," or "ken." These pronouns agree in number and case with the noun they refer to. The verb within the defining clause is typically in the third person singular or plural. For instance, in the sentence "Talo, joka on punainen, on minun" (The house that is red is mine), "joka on punainen" is a defining relative clause. It tells us *which* house is being referred to – specifically, the red one, as opposed to any other house.

The omission of a defining relative clause would fundamentally alter the meaning or make it ambiguous. If the clause were removed, the sentence might refer to any house. The primary function of these clauses is therefore restrictive; they restrict the possible referents of the noun phrase they are attached to.
