Märkäpuhdistimet, also known as wet scrubbers, are air pollution control devices that use a scrubbing liquid to remove pollutants from exhaust flue gases. They are commonly employed in industrial settings to reduce emissions of particulate matter and harmful gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. The process involves bringing the flue gas into contact with a liquid, typically water, which absorbs or traps the pollutants.

There are several types of märkäpuhdistimet, each with its own design and method of operation. Venturi scrubbers are known for their high efficiency in removing fine particulate matter due to the high velocity at which the gas and liquid are mixed. Spray towers use a series of spray nozzles to distribute the scrubbing liquid, allowing for good contact with the flue gas. Packed bed scrubbers utilize a bed of packing material, such as rings or saddles, to increase the surface area for gas-liquid contact. Other variations include impingement scrubbers and cyclonic spray scrubbers.
