The basic principle involves bringing the contaminated gas into intimate contact with the scrubbing liquid, allowing the pollutants to be absorbed or captured by the liquid.

There are several types of märkäpesureita, each with its own design and operating characteristics. Common examples include venturi scrubbers, packed bed scrubbers, and spray towers. Venturi scrubbers are known for their high efficiency in removing fine particulate matter. Packed bed scrubbers utilize a bed of packing material to increase the surface area for gas-liquid contact. The effectiveness of a märkäpesuri depends on factors such as the gas flow rate, the type and concentration of pollutants, and the properties of the scrubbing liquid. The liquid used is often treated to neutralize absorbed pollutants or to facilitate their separation.
