Märkähuovutuksessa

Märkähuovutus, or wet felting in English, is a technique used to create felt fabric from wool fibers. This process involves using water and agitation to interlock the wool fibers. The natural scales on the wool fibers are opened by the water and then encouraged to bind together through friction and pressure.

The basic materials for märkähuovutus are wool roving or carded wool and warm soapy water. The wool is laid out in layers, typically with fibers alternating direction to create a stronger fabric. Water, often mixed with soap, is then applied to the wool. Gentle rubbing and pressing are the initial steps. As the process continues, the agitation increases. This can involve rolling the wool in a mat, using a felting needle to lightly poke the fibers together before submerging, or even throwing and catching the rolled wool.

The key to successful wet felting is achieving fulling, where the fibers shrink and tighten significantly, creating a dense and durable material. The soap helps to lubricate the fibers, allowing them to move and interlock more easily. Once the desired density and size are achieved, the felt is rinsed thoroughly to remove all soap residue. The final piece is then shaped while still damp and allowed to dry, often by laying it flat or draping it. Märkähuovutus can be used to create a wide range of items, from flat art pieces and decorative elements to functional objects like bags, hats, and slippers. The control over shaping and texture makes it a versatile craft.
